History
In 1979, a rehabilitation scheme was set up by the Welfare Section of the then Shire of Wanneroo’s Health Department. It’s purpose was to get physically disabled people, living within the Shire, to be more actively involved, by getting them together to learn skills, new hobbies and interests and to have the companionship of others, that had, up to that time been lacking.
The therapist, Doreen Bullock, found many disabled people to be socially isolated and took a small number to her home for art lessons. Doreen soon found support from one of the carers, Joy Morrison, who was instrumental in networking, with the local community, and in fund raising activities to support the group.
The beneficial effects were immediately felt and the growth of the group, as can be seen by the following table, was quite dramatic, necessitating that space be found for the group at a Shire hall.
